The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System.
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System will provide a single streamlined national reporting method for greenhouse gas emissions and energy data across all jurisdictions in Australia.
From 1 July 2008, corporations will be required to register and report if:
1. they control facilities that emit >25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas, or produce/consume >100 Tera Joules of energy; or
2. their corporate group emits >125,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas, or produces/consumes >500 Tera Joules of energy.
Lower thresholds for corporate groups will be phased in by 2010-11. The final thresholds will be 50,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent or 200 Tera Joules of energy.
Reporting will occur through a web based system, called the Online System for Comprehensive Activity Reporting.
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System is being designed for compatibility with a future Australian Emissions Trading Scheme.
Public consultation about the system is currently occurring; for more information, please see the Department of Climate Change.
